More Than a Bowl of Soup!

Good Morning Good Lunchers!

As a port city historically soaked in thick fog, mist, and downpours, soup has been an integral part of San Francisco’s diet for centuries. From our famous clam chowder and wanton soups, to the cioppino, a classic fish stew that was invented right here in the late 1800s by Italian immigrants after settling in North Beach, soup has always been a lifeblood here. Aged as the history of cooking itself, it remains one of the purest translations of any region’s unique cultural identity. Here, it’s provided warmth and comfort in an often times schizophrenic climate. And, it’s nourished everyone from forty-niner era settlers and miners and post-earthquake refugees, to five-star dining elites. Virtually every menu offers a soup of some kind, and San Francisco is known for its wide spectrum of ethnic varietals.

With that said, certainly there are days your team craves something on the lighter side
for lunch, warm, homestyle, and mellow on the system. If you haven’t managed to run into the San Francisco Soup Company yet, then allow us to properly guide you. As a family owned business, they’ve been bowling up soups for people all across the bay now for the past fifteen years. And they do it well.

Part of their success is due to their assortment of really flavorful, consistent signature soups, like their thick and creamy corn chowder, the smoky split pea, and (ironically) a New England clam chowder. All of which guarantee the kind of satisfaction you expect from a soup on a daily basis. In addition, they keep an ongoing list of changing specialty soups, where they get a bit more creative. Last we had, the Caribbean sweet potato was quite tasty!

Beyond the soup itself, their menu is responsibly labeled according to a matrix of gluten free, vegetarian, spicy, low fat, and low carb. The S.F. Soup Company was also one of the first establishments in the nation to use nearly 100% biodegradable cutlery
and packaging, and they’ve been composting since 2002, years before the city passed a mandatory recycling and composting ordinance. Of course, they utilize all locally sourced organic foods from regional partners. There’s good reason why they’ve become a popular go-to spot. There’s something about a soup that satiates like no other food. We’re happy they’re carrying forth the old tradition of stewing goodness in great pots.

Keep the San Francisco Soup Company in your rotation. Just login to your account or call or email us and let us know what you need.

Happy Lunching!

Burma Love is All You Need!

Hello Good Lunchers!

By now, you’re probably aware that Burmese food is a big thing here. Back in ’92, the scene was introduced to the traditional flavors of Myanmar when the locally beloved Burma Superstar opened its first spot here in the city. Ever since, they’ve taken the Bay by storm expanding to Oakland and Alameda and, more recently, to the Mission. While Burmese cuisine has roots here that go back to the sixties brought over by large groups of refugees who emigrated here, Burma Love is a direct relative of Burma Superstar, and continues to build our wide South Asian palette. In their own words, Burma Love picks up where Burma Superstar has left off, expanding and deepening the Myanmar cuisine experience “by introducing classic dishes that are shared at family feasts,” and are “more spicy and a bit more concentrated in flavor” with a deeper emphasis on seafood.

Considered a harmonious blend of Chinese, Indian and Thai cuisines, Burmese
food is generally a melange of more mild curries, thick hearty soups, and super dynamic, innovative salads. In general, it is less sweet than Thai, and tends towards the more sour and savory. It’s also usually more pungent, veering into the realm of Chinese with its use of fish sauce and different pastes, de-emphasizing the spicy flare you get in Indian. And Burma Love, like Burma Superstar, does their country proud.

If you’re late to the table on this one, no better time to try these delicious flavors than today over lunch with your team, all around a table dishing it up together family style, sampling all the complexities and unique specialties that have knitted Burmese family culture together for centuries. Start with the Tea Leaf and Rainbow salads (they’re incredible!), and then mix it up with a bunch of different curries and vegetable dishes. Seriously, the menu is incredibly deep, varied, and we just can’t say enough about this kind of comfort food.

We’re psyched to have Burma Love in our corner, and hope you’ll dive into their amazing food whenever you wish. Just login to your account, call or text us. We’ll set you up! As always you can call or email us and let us know what you need.

Your Own Private Happy Hour!

Dear Good Lunchers,

Sometimes it’s just not possible to get out of work in time to share a few Happy Hour drinks and dollar oysters with your team. What if Happy Hour came to you?
This week we want to let you know that we can help you plan and host your very own Happy Hour office party with very little effort on your part.

There are a number of different approaches you could take. Maybe it’s a nice selection of wines paired with Bocadillos’ tapas, like aged cured hams and artisan cheeses; or, you might want to stick to our classic California favorite and serve up some awesome tacos with beer and lime. It would be as fun and tasty to go the Asian route, diving into some delicious spring rolls, satay, or gyoza. We could set you up with a sushi platter and sake, if that’s how your partners in crime like to roll. Of course, sometimes you crave pure American tradition and can’t wait to hit some sliders and gourmet fries along with some pitchers of proper Californian craft beer.

However you envision it, we can easily design a Happy Hour menu that will hit the spot. We can provide a server to take all of the labor off your plate, for larger party sizes, or if you simply don’t want to deal with the hassle. We’ll have someone set it up and break it all down, all you have to do is get your team to show up! For those who are more serious about serving cocktails, mixologist services can also be arranged.

Just login to our website and browse our menus, there are some awesome choices there. As always you can call, text or email us and let us know what you need.

It’s Not Ice Cream. It’s Mitchell’s Ice Cream.

Hey There Good Lunchers!

As you know, our city has always had a love affair with ice cream. Thanks to one family in particular: Mitchell’s!

Yes, it’s true, the artisan community here has done a lot recently to experiment and evolve food culture in some very sweet and savory ways, but sometimes you just want to stick with a more traditional take that keeps a more classic modern flair. Long before all of the new gourmet creameries came to town, the Mitchell family migrated to California back in 1865 to start a dairy farm. Decades later in 1953, ripe with a passion for ice cream, two of the Mitchell brothers opened their historic ice cream store after saving their family’s old self-built apartment building from demolition and renovating its aged storefront. In fact, they were the very first ones to bring mango ice cream to the city back in the sixties! Mitchell’s Ice Cream is the O.G. of the San Francisco ice cream scene. They’ve been scooping up new flavors for generations and have blazed the trail for every new ice creamery in their wake. The first taste of avocado ice cream we ever enjoyed was right there at Mitchell’s twenty years ago.

Mitchell’s Ice Cream remains a stout pillar in the community, and a very important one during this time of rapid change, and we are proud to support them. So, the next time your office starts to feel hot and stuffy in the afternoon, consider throwing a Mitchell’s Ice Cream party for your crew. The store is gearing up for its late summer spring and summer flavors, and by the end of May peach and cantaloupe is on the menu, in addition to their dozens of other regular flavors. Who doesn’t make time for ice cream?
Just check out Mitchell’s menu, and let us know what you want, from dishes to cones, gallons and toppings. We will take care of the rest.

Also don’t forget you can just contact us with whatever kind of catering your office needs and we will put everything together for you. Or take a moment and login to our website to view some of the menus available for your catering needs. As always you can call, text or email us and let us know what you need.

Have Your Cake and Eat It Too!

Dear Good Lunchers,

Much of what we strive to offer is the best quality and affordable meals that can be ordered and delivered with total convenience . At the end of last year, we announced a new Party & Large Event planning service. This year, we continue to expand by rounding out all of the meals and event planning options with one exceptional addition: cakes! What party isn’t complete without a truly delicious and memorable cake?

We’re not talking about any old cakes, either. We’re tickled to introduce you to Whole Cakes.

In their own words, “All of us are watching carefully what we eat in our meals and we expect the same freshness and wholesome ingredients in our desserts.” And they’ve got the sweets to walk their talk, too. They’re doing something really special, and we’ve done the legwork to vouch for it. How about a Sweet Potato Mousse filled Cake? Or, a Triple Carrot and Apple? That’s just the beginning. One of their signatures is a Green Tea Cake, but wait until you try their Red Bean and Pistachio. Of course, they would be credible without a gluten free Almond Honey Cake, and yes, it rocks! Seriously, we have been busy taste testing these for you and all are truly original and absolutely to die for.

Login to Good Lunch, drop us an email or call or text us at 415-294-1186, and we will take care of everything!

A Beefless Burger

Hey there Good Lunch fans!

As you know, a good burger isn’t difficult to find in our city. Every casual menu includes one. And there are enough menus out there serving only burgers to keep you searching for the best one for days. With access to the best quality grass fed meats from farms nearby, and a large strictly vegetarian culture here as well, predictably, the burger scape has become a wild canvas for design and innovation.

So, adding an original take to the scene might seem daunting. Enter Big Chef Tom’s Belly Burgers. A burger not only without fear, but just the right amount of twist that doesn’t veer recklessly into the realm of reinvention. To start, there’s no beef. Literally! He’s pretty much concocted the best all ground pork belly burgers you’ll ever try. And padded them in a soft billowy bun with all the right flavors to go with ’em. And they have been thoroughly vetted, too.

Tom comes from Food Network fame where he had his own TV show for years before launching a hugely successful food truck that eventually landed his famous bites on the catering dockets of Yelp, Dropbox, and Craigslist, to name a few. Take a look at this menu: the gist? Choose from either ground pork belly, chicken thigh, or a spirited vegetarian patty, and flavor with fixings from around the world. We’re talking everything from rosemary mayo and Vietnamese caramel sauces, to cumin dressings and serano lemon jams. Wow. There are lots of really yummy sides to go with them-but, whatever you do, don’t miss out on the slaw!

Just shoot us an email or text us your order at 415-294-1186, and we will take care of the rest. You can also login to Good Lunch today and order that way if you prefer.

Pinsa from Montesacro

Good morning Good Lunchers!

As you know, San Francisco is chock full of Italian restaurants, from classic old school red sauce joints, to the tourist traps in North Beach that boast being the gateway to the Bay’s original local Italian cuisine. With no shortage of pizza ovens around town either, choosing a truly good casual spot can be a tricky hit n miss at best. So, one question: have you ever had pinsa?

It is said ‘pinsa’ represents the true origin of ‘pizza’ based on a completely different imported dough that dates back to a peasant preparation from ancient Rome. Everything rests on a fire crusted wheat flatbread, that is an amazing balance of crunchy and airy with a soft gnocchi-like center rather than the thick heavy doughs you typically get with most modern pizzas. It’s healthier and easier to digest, too. And no one in town is doing it better, if at all, than Montesacro.

That’s why we’re so excited to tell you about this secret gem, which may be the most original new addition to the Italian food scene here in years. Located in the Tender-Mid-Ma area, it’s already getting nods for its authentic Roman style plates. The most popular is the Montesacro pinsa, topped with lightly charred ribbons of fresh kale, sliced pepperoncini, and a light layer of garum, a very popular fermented fish sauce that gives an amazing earthy, salty flavor. It’s delicious! When they say food has the ability to transport us from place and time, perhaps no food promises this better, or delivers more so than Italian. And perhaps nothing does this more so than pinsa.

Montesacro also serves up cheeseless and vegetarian pinsas for those who prefer. Each is generally sized for one, so be sure to dish up some antipasti as well. They have great insalates. Seriously, for your next pizza party, surprise your office crew with a few pinsas. This place will change the way you think about pizza. It’s ancestral, epic simplicity is a real treat and homage to pizza’s very roots!

Drop us an email or call or text us at 415-294-1186, and we will take care of everything!
